Prerequirements for your
own Domain
Domainname
The Law of Names has in the internet the same right as everywere else.
If you use a domain, althought you are not the name owner, you can get
troubles. Even if you got the domainname by the registrar.
Which names can become a problem ?
- City's, towns, communities like Berlin, Zürich
- Companienames like IBM, but also a single buisness man like
P.Muller Carpenter Zug ....
- Trademarks like M&M, Mars....
- Club's like Footballclub...
- Institutions like Schools, Universitys....
- Public Departments...
- Living Persons, died Person or the synonym or starname
But there are many existing product, havin a trademark and you will
never get any problems. Just think at car pages holdet by many fans.
Hosting
Provider, Provider or Sever Hosting
Hosting Provider
Advantage: cheaper, faster, bether observation, less Mailproblems
Disadvantage: less Diskspace, less individual possibilities
beside: Upload with FTP or SSH
Provider:
PC at your home:
Advantage: More Possibilities, more Diskspace, more Email Accounts....
Disadvantage: slower, no alltime observation. You need a alltime
connection like ADSL or cablemodem... probably Mailproblems.
beside: You can do the upload with the internal net.
Serverhosting:
Advantage: More Diskspace, more possibilities,
bether observation, probably less mailproblems..
Disadvatange: Your own PC is in the Serverroom at your provider. Some
service must be done there. Usually this can be done only at
officetime.
ADSL
or cable modem:
ADSL has a limited speed. It is bether as a dialupmodem, but cable
modem has even more speed.
But, do you really need a very fast 100mbit connection for the few
people connecting to your page ? For most situations ADSL is more than
enought. But think that you share the same connetions with other
people. If you download many movies, people probably wont get a fast
connection to your side.
Costs: Keep in mind, that costs can rise, if you have to pay for each
mb or GB of traffic. If your side is mentioned in a TV-Show you can get
a lot of traffic.
Every homepage can go out off service just with a coordinated massive
download.
PC:
Pentium P100 with 64 MB Ram as a minimum is ok. If you do
more then just sending plain HTML you should think about a PC with more
pover. OS/2 MCP2 or just ECS are ok. The client version is more then
enough in most cases. You need more, if you have a lot of CGI's and
Scripts in the backgroung running.
MailBackup or backup mailserver on
you Provider:
Every mails incoming or outgoing will be back up on the providers
mailserver. If your mailserver is out of service, the backup mailserver
does service for you. Additional most provider filter every mail for
spam. Incoming, but also outgoing mail. Just keep in mind, that a PC
can have avirus. But this virus downloads a list of emails and a spam.
The virus will send every adress in the list the spam. Afterwards, it
will go on with the next spam or the next list. This way you becom a
spamer althought you don't want it.
Special
Problems:
It is a advantage if you have a fixe IP. If not, you can use http://www.dyndns.org
The Problems with DNS refers Mail. A mailserver like mail.os2force.ch
has a IP. But DNS does not only delivers the IP. The name is like
"fixipxxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.provider.yy." If we have at the beginning ADSL,
DialUp, dialin,
DynamicConnect or something, that looks like a "not provider", many
hidden firewall filter the mail and trow it away. Unfortunatly, you
will get every time a wrong error message.
I my case this meant: anybody who sent mail with the mailserver
Highspeed.ch to my mailserver have not been able to send mails to
me. They got the message "could not establish
connetion to mail.os2force.ch" oder "554 mail.os2force.ch rejected
connection." To make it even worse: in most cases one direction is
open. I was able to send mail, but couln't get any from sertain people.
Some providers allow mail only with theyr mailserver. I had to
chanche the provider to get rid of this anoyng mailproblems.
Reverselooup:
DNS gives a IP if we aks for a mailserver. But we can do more. We can
ask wich network has this IP. When we have mail.os2force.ch and the
network is in this case green.ch, we know, that this probably not a
provider. It could bee a spammer. The missing DNS entry can only
be done by your provider. But provider are very careful to doo this.
In my case: it is a smal problem. Only WEB.DE trows mails from me
away. But i get every other day a Spam from web.de. This shows
how stupid dthis solution is.
Most providers check your mail host on a testside, wich makes a query
on 35 different testsides. I got 34 negativ and one positiv result.
Some of this tests try to use your mailserver as open relay.
content:
The content of your hompages Is unther the same law's as other medias
like Radio, TV, Newspapers....
If you publish Music or Pictures be sure, you have the approve or you
made it by your selv. If you do the musik at yourselv, keep in mind
that in countrys like switzzerland, you have pay taxes for the notes,
but you have to pay also for every time you play this song. And it does
not matter, wether you play it once for hundred people or it is
downloaded hundred times. Take care of privacy if you publish pictures
of people.
And very importend: If you live in another country as your
provider, you can get troubles in both countrys.
If you live in Switzzerland, the Webserver hosting your domain is in
the British comenwealth, lets say Canada and the Plaintiff is in one of
the France kolonies and married with a US. You can go to justice in
Switzzerland, almost anywere in the Comenwealth, Great Britain,
Canada, USA, France, and in any of the France colonies.
Ok, this is really a dark dark theoretical case, but it could
happen.
Mailserver:
In some countrys like switzzerland has a communication law. This
includes mail, fax, phone and evry other kind of communication.
The bigest provider termintates instandly at least two clients each day
because they have a open relay mailserver. And you don't have any
rights of compensations !!
